Money Status is one of the four Money Scripts identified by Dr. Brad Klontz, characterized by the core belief that your self-worth is directly tied to your net worth. Individuals with this money script use money as a way to display success and gain social approval, prioritizing outward displays of wealth and linking their identity closely to their financial achievements or possessions. Common beliefs include "It is important to look successful," "People are more respected if they make a lot of money," "I will not buy something unless it is new," and "If something is not considered the 'best,' it is not worth buying."
This script manifests in behaviors such as overspending on luxury items to impress others, feeling embarrassed about driving an older car or living in a modest home, and basing major life decisions on how they'll look to others rather than what's best for one's financial health. Money Status can lead to significant financial strain, accumulation of debt, and a constant need for external validation through material possessions, often at the expense of long-term financial security.
