Money Vigilance is one of the four Money Scripts identified by Dr. Brad Klontz, based on the core belief that money should be saved, not spent, and that financial security requires constant caution. Individuals with this money script are extremely cautious and secretive about money, believing that money should be saved rather than spent and that one should work hard for every dollar earned. Common beliefs include "Money should be saved, not spent," "It is important to save for a rainy day," "People should work for their money and not be given financial handouts," and "It is wrong for people to ask me for money."
This script manifests in behaviors such as having difficulty enjoying money even when one can afford to spend it, feeling excessive worry about one's financial future despite having adequate savings, and struggling to be generous with others due to fears of financial insecurity. While Money Vigilance can promote healthy saving habits and financial responsibility, in its extreme form it can prevent individuals from enjoying life's pleasures, lead to excessive anxiety about money, and create difficulty in experiencing financial satisfaction even when financially secure.
