ESOP Diversification Election: What Does It Mean?
search for terms
An ESOP diversification election lets employees age 55 or older move part of their ESOP balance out of company stock. In private company ESOPs, you qualify at 55 with at least 10 years in the plan, and federal law then gives you a six-year window: up to 25% of your company shares during the first five years, then up to 50% in the sixth. The company may offer other investment options within the plan, pay out cash, or transfer the money to a 401(k) or similar plan.
This rule exists because having most of your retirement savings tied to one company is risky, especially as retirement gets closer. Moving some money into other investments spreads that risk, the same idea behind portfolio diversification. Using the election is optional, but it's worth reviewing each year you're eligible.
